Matamoros is a city and its surrounding municipality in the northeast of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. It is located at 25°52′N, 97°30′W, across the Rio Grande from the U.S. state of Texas.

Matamoros is about 1000 km away from Mexico City and 571 km from Houston, Texas. The city was renamed for Independence War hero Mariano Matamoros in the early 19th century. The city also holds the "H" for "Heroic" or "Heroica" before the name because the city was defended from invaders trying to take over it over.

The two cities are related historically and culturally with economic cooperation dating back to the American Civil War, when the two cities served as an access area for vital Civil War supplies. Since then, the two cities have taken advantage of their geographic location as Mexico's nearest gateway to the United States.

In the last few years, the dynamic flow of investments into Matamoros has been outstanding with the city experiencing the highest growth rate (2.8%) of Mexico and a Year 2005 total population count of 462,157 people.

Even as Matamoros has become the third largest maquiladora center in Mexico, the city has been able to maintain the lowest turnover rate (16.27%) of the three largest manufacturing sectors along the Texas border.

State and local government strives to promote harmony between industry and the environment. Tha Canadian Chamber of Commerce encourages any new sites within the city to fulfill county, state and federal environmental norms by maintaining a moderate consumption of natural resources.
