FOR BROADCAST USE: Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, announced today a federal investment of $25,000 for UVS Canada to host its annual aerospace and defence conference Aerospace and defence experts from around the world will meet in St. John’s tomorrow for the annual UVS (Unmanned Vehicle Systems) Canada conference thanks to a $25,000 investment from the Government of Canada. The funding was announced today by the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

“The Government of Canada is working with its partners to get things done for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Minister Hearn. “This conference is an excellent opportunity for Newfoundland and Labrador’s aerospace and defence sector to showcase its strengths and capabilities to an international audience and for our local companies to interact with potential partners and clients.”

Unmanned Vehicle Systems are robots that fly, swim, and crawl and are controlled by computers. Their human operators can be in a different location, sometimes thousands of kilometres away. Besides their military use, they are also gaining popularity for environmental monitoring, surveying, surveillance, and research activities.

The UVS Canada conference attracts an international audience of manufacturers, suppliers and users of unmanned vehicle systems. This year’s event, the “Expanding Horizons Conference 2007” being held November 6-9, will provide participants with an opportunity to interact, exchange ideas and learn about the potential use of UVS technologies in military and civil applications. The conference is expected to attract 350 delegates from around the world, representing aerospace and defence contractors, and representatives from the military, government and academia.

“We’re very excited to be holding the conference in St. John’s for the first time,” said Pip Rudkin, UVS Canada conference chair, board member, and manager of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for Provincial Aerospace Limited. “Newfoundland and Labrador companies and organizations are developing innovative products and services for niche markets throughout the world, and as such, the conference theme ‘Expanding Horizons’ is particularly appropriate because it reflects the province’s growing aerospace and defence sector.”

Financial assistance for this initiative is being provided through ACOA’s Business Development Program which provides funding to non-commercial and not-for-profit organizations that provide a service to business in areas such as entrepreneurship development, marketing, training or technology transfer.
